Washington, Sept 15, SPA -- A key Senate committee defied President George W. Bush on Thursday and approved terror-detainee legislation he has vowed to block. Senator John Warner (Republican from Virginia), chairman of the Armed Services Committee, pushed a bill he helped draft through his panel by a 15-9 vote, with Warner and three other Republican lawmakers joining Democrats. The vote set the stage for a showdown on the Senate floor as early as next week. Earlier in the day, Bush visited lawmakers to try and garner support for his own version of the legislation, which he said would ensure that a controversial CIA detention program could continue.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/389644
