United Nations, June 2, SPA -- Saudi Arabia sent recently a letter to the U.N. Security Council documenting its implementation system to enforce international laws on the prohibition of chemical weapons, according to documents released by the United Nations. The Saudi mission to the United Nations presented the document to the Security Council in response to a general request made by the council’s committee on Resolution 1540, which deals with non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The document, titled “Implementation System for the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling, and Use of Chemical Weapons and on Their Destruction,” provides an eight-page outline of chemical-industry policy. The document is divided into eight chapters, and details the procedure to obtain permits for non-prohibited chemical activities, including in the industrial, agricultural, and medical sectors. Those who use chemical agents for peaceful purposes must adhere to a strict reporting schedule and inform the Saudi government of exactly how much chemicals were produced and prepare annual reports on chemical activities, the document said. --SPA www.spa.gov.sa/365701
