1 killed, 23 wounded in grenade attack in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, India (AP) _ Suspected Muslim insurgents hurled a hand grenade Saturday at a police patrol in theIndian-controlled section of Kashmir, killing one personand wounding at least 23 others, seven of them seriously,police and hospital officials said. The grenade was thrown at a police vehicle that hadstopped in a busy market in Sopor, a town about 50kilometers (30 miles) north of Srinagar, the summer capitalof India's Jammu-Kashmir state, local police chief ViplavKumar said. Four officers and at least 20 civilians were hurt in theblast, Kumar said. Eight of the civilians were in a seriouscondition and had been taken to Srinagar for treatment, hesaid. One of the wounded was declared dead on arrival atSrinagar's main hospital, said Manzoor Ahmed, a doctorthere.
