New York, Aug 23, SPA -- Qatar on Tuesday urged the U.N. Security Council to order the lifting of the air and sea blockade imposed on Lebanon by Israel.“We cannot but state that the continuous air and sea embargo imposed by Israel against Lebanon impedes the efforts of the humanitarian agencies to deliver supplies to those who are sorely in need of them” Qatari Ambassador Nassir Abulaziz Al-Nasser told the council. “In light of this, we call upon the Security Council to assume its responsibility by obligating Israel to lift immediately the embargo imposed against Lebanon,” Al-Nasser said. More than 25 U.N. members, including all 15 members of the council, addressed the Security Council on the current situation in Lebanon. U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said, “if the international community applies only a temporary bandage solution to the problem and allows Hezbollah to regroup and re-arm, then the suffering of the people of Lebanon and Israel may very well intensify in the near future.” Iranian Ambassador Mehdi Yazdi suggested that Israel seeks to undermine the current cease-fire established in U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701. “This sense of concern cannot be overlooked, especially when the U.N. has confirmed several instances of violations of the provisions of Resolution 1701 by the Israeli regime in the past few days,” he said. --SPA www.spa.gov.sa/384470
