Al-Quds city, April 10, SPA -- Israel will allow a portionof the tax revenues it withholds from a Hamas-led government tobe used to pay Palestinian debts to Israeli utility companies,Israeli officials said on Monday. The Israeli government decided in February to halt tax revenue transfers, estimated at $50 million to $60 million per month, to the Palestinian Authority to isolate Hamas after its election victory in January, Reuters reported. Collected by Israel on behalf of the Palestinians, the money was used by the Authority to pay salaries and other expenses. Hamas officials have said in recent days that the government's treasury is empty and that it is unclear when it will be able to pay salaries to 140,000 employees. Israel has been under pressure from the United Nations and the European Union to resume the tax revenue transfers, or to find another way to make the money available to the Palestinian people without providing it to the Hamas-led government. --SPA 11 08 Local Time 08 08 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/352494
