SATURDAY ROME, APRIL 29, SPA -- THE BODIES OF THREE ITALIAN TROOPS KILLED IN IRAQ THIS WEEK WERE SCHEDULED TO ARRIVE AT A ROME AIRPORT SATURDAY. TOP STATE OFFICIALS AS WELL AS RELATIVES AND SOLDIERS WERE EXPECTED TO GATHER AT ROME’S CIAMPINO MILITARY AIRPORT, WHERE THE AIRCRAFT CARRYING THE CASKETS IS EXPECTED TO LAND AT 4 P.M. (1400GMT). THE THREE MEN DIED THURSDAY WHEN THEIR CONVOY WAS HIT BY A ROADSIDE BOMB IN THE SOUTHERN IRAQI CITY OF NASIRIYAH, WHERE THE ITALIAN CONTINGENT IS BASED. A ROMANIAN SOLDIER WAS ALSO KILLED IN THE ATTACK, WHILE ANOTHER OFFICER WITH THE CARABINIERI WAS SERIOUSLY WOUNDED. THE THREE ITALIAN VICTIMS WERE NICOLA CIARDELLI, 33, ANARMY PARATROOPER, AND FRANCO LATTANZIO AND CARLO DE TRIZIO, BOTH WARRANT OFFICERS WITH THE CARABINIERI PARAMILITARY POLICE. A STATE FUNERAL HAS BEEN SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTED.
