United Nations, June 10, SPA -- The Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations on Friday called on the international community to force Israel to stop attacks against Palestinians. Ambassador Riyadh Mansour’s plea came shortly after seven family members were killed at a Gaza beach, apparently by Israeli artillery or naval fire. “The situation in Gaza is extremely explosive,” Mansour told reporters. “It is the responsibility of the Security Council to do everything possible.” “The president of the Security Council might contact the Israeli ambassador and bring to the Israeli government the position of the council that it cannot tolerate such aggression, particularly against civilians,” Mansour said. Asked by S.P.A. if the Middle East peacemaking Quartet might have a role in calming tensions, Mansour said Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas “contacted the Quartet and requested from them a pronouncement on this issue to protest the Israeli aggression.” “The occupying authority … is trying to create confusion and to destabilize the Palestinian situation, and the Palestinian leadership condemned this action,” said Mansour. --SPA 10/06/2006 10:39 ت م www.spa.gov.sa/367572
