Asia-Pacific leaders call on Europe to be more flexible at world trade talks 2

Busan The leaders are set to endorse a statement agreed uponearlier by APEC ministers in support of the WTO's so-calledDoha round. It acknowledged "considerable divergences"and said "a clear roadmap" must be established if theround is to succeed. "It's not being melodramatic to say that unless there isa very significant shift in the attitude of some countries,we are not going to have a successful Doha trade round,"Australian Prime Minister John Howard told a gathering ofexecutives earlier. Meanwhile, Chile's and Mexico's presidents defendedbilateral and regional free trade agreements as good fortheir economies, but emphasized a strong WTO-based systemwas most desirable. China and Chile signed a free-tradeagreement on APEC's sidelines _ the first between the Asiangiant and a Latin American country. In their final declaration, the leaders will support freetrade and express strong concern about the threats ofterrorism and bird flu, according to a draft seen by TheAssociated Press. "Terrorism remains as a menacing threat to our world andwe condemned terrorist acts that not only took thousands oflives but have also been aiming to destabilize the securityof the region," the draft states. Concerns about a possible human pandemic spawned by birdflu have grown in recent days with China announcing itsfirst human cases, including the first deaths. Bush isexpected to make bird flu a major focus, and APEC leadersare expected to agree to boost their preparedness.
