Baghdad, July 25, SPA -- Australian Prime Minister John Howardarrived Monday for a surprise visit and talks with the newU.S.-backed government, the Iraqi government's press officesaid. Howard was meeting with Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari,the government press office said. He is also expected tomeet with some of the 750 Australian troops in Iraq. About half the Australian force is in southern Iraqhelping train Iraqi security forces and protecting Japanesemilitary engineers working on reconstruction efforts. Howard, who had been visiting Britain, has been among thestrongest supporters of the U.S.-led mission in Iraq.Australian troops fought in the U.S.-led invasion launchedin March 2003. The Australian leader has recently met with U.S. PresidentGeorge W.
