Insurgent attacks kill at least nine in Iraq

Baghdad, Jan 22, SPA -- Insurgents launched roadside bombblasts and rocket-propelled grenade attacks north ofBaghdad early Sunday, killing at least nine people earlySunday, including a policeman's four children. The children, aged from 6 to 11 years, and their uncledied in the attack by a team of insurgents shortly aftermidnight on their home in Balad Ruz, 70 kilometers (45miles) northeast of Baghdad, according to spokesman fromthe Iraqi police Joint Coordination Center. Their father, Abdul-Sattar Hussein, was unhurt in theattack, launched by insurgents firing rocket-propelledgrenades at their home and wounding his wife, said thespokesman who declined to be identified further due tofears of reprisal attacks. Four policemen were killed and nine wounded in a pre-dawnroadside bomb blast that targeted their patrol in Baqouba,60 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of Baghdad, the samecenter was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. Despite the violence, U.S. Brig. Gen. Don Alston toldreporters Sunday that insurgent attacks nationwide weredown 40 percent last week over the previous week.
