Iraqi President says insurgent groups are contacting his office for talks

Baghdad, Nov 27, SPA -- President Jalal Talabani said Sundaythat insurgent groups have responded to his call for talksand have contacted his office. "We are receiving calls from groups who claim to be fromthe resistance and they are expressing their support formeetings" with the government, Talabani told reporters."We want to convince every sincere Iraqi who is carryingarms to come and participate in the political process." Talabani did not name the groups that contacted hisoffice, but residents of Anbar province said Thursday thatfour insurgent groups that are active in that area areconferring among themselves to chose a representative tomeet government officials. The Iraqi Islamic Army, the 1920 Revolution group, theMujahedeen Army and al-Jamea Brigades were asked by thepresident's office to chose one person to come forward withtheir demands, according to the residents, who havecontacts with the insurgents. The residents spoke oncondition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, the Associated Press reported. Speaking in Egypt last week during a reconciliationconference, Talabani said he was ready for talks.
