Bush and South Korean leader agree to resolve North Korean issue through peaceful dip

Gyeongju, South Korea, Nov 17, SPA -- U.S. President George W. Bush and South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun declared Thursdaythat a nuclear-armed North Korea "will not be tolerated"and agreed that the international standoff with thecommunist nation over its weapons ambitions should beresolved through peaceful diplomacy. Bush and Roh met in Gyeongju, an ancient capital of Korea,ahead of a summit of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperationforum whose 21 members include the leaders of the fivecountries negotiating with North Korea for its nucleardisarmament. North Korea isn't attending the summit. Roh said the second phase of the fifth round ofdisarmament talks should be held as soon as possible toreach a breakthrough. "We have no disagreements at allthat this issue must be resolved," Roh said, calling hisfifth meeting with Bush "constructive." "We reiterated that a nuclear-armed North Korea will notbe tolerated and reaffirmed that the issue should beresolved through peaceful and diplomatic means," Roh said. Bush agreed. "It's in the world's interest that thishappen," the U.S. president said. "It's also in ourinterest that we continue to work together to solve theproblem. I see a peninsula one day that is united and atpeace." Separately, China's President Hu Jintao said his country _the North's main benefactor and a key player in six-nationstalks on the North's nuclear programs _ also remainedcommitted to the process. The two Koreas, the UnitedStates, Russia and Japan are the other parties to thetalks. "We firmly support whatever is conducive to safeguardingpeace and stability on the peninsula," Hu said in a speechin the capital Seoul to South Korea's National Assembly."As proven by facts, the peaceful resolution to thepeninsula's nuclear issue through dialogue is the mostrealistic and reasonable method." Bush said Washington would not comply with North Korea'sdemand that it be provided with a light-water nuclearreactor before it disarms, a stumbling block in the talks. "We'll consider the light-water reactor at theappropriate time," Bush said. "The appropriate time isafter they have verifiably given up their nuclear weaponsand, or program." Roh said the two leaders talked at length about the NorthKorean nuclear issue and exchanged views about the Northattitude and tactics. "We are basically looking to resolve this North Koreannuclear issue, and we are exploring more ways that we canresolve this issue," Roh was quoted as saying by The Associated Press.
