Berlin, June 4, SPA -- German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and French President Jacques Chirac were to meet Saturday to discuss the crisis in the European Union following the decisiverejection of its proposed constitution by French and Dutchvoters. Both leaders have called for ratification of the charterto continue, and Schroeder said Thursday, one day after theDutch vote, that "every form of overreaction at this stageis wrong." He also stressed the importance of reaching an agreementon another issue that has generated friction _ the EU'sfunding in the 2007-2013 period. The meeting over dinner between Chirac and Schroeder, atthe German leader's office, comes ahead of a June 16-17 EUsummit in Brussels, Belgium. The two plan to meet again in Paris late next week. Germany did not hold a referendum on the constitution. Theupper house of parliament ratified the charter May 27, twodays before the French vote. EU leaders say the document would streamlinedecision-making in the 25-nation bloc.
