Colombo, Sri Lanka, June 22, SPA -- A European peace envoy begantalks with a top Tamil Tiger rebel leader in northern SriLanka on Wednesday, a rebel spokesman said. The two areexpected to discuss a tsunami aid-sharing plan that hasdivided the government. Norway's Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen wasmeeting with S.P. Thamilselvan, the political head of theLiberation Tigers of Tamileelam, in Kilinochchi town, saidSilvaraja Sanojan, an official at the LTT Media office. Hedeclined to provide details of the talks. Helgesen arrived in Sri Lanka Monday on mission to easetensions arising from a proposal under which the governmentand separatist rebels would jointly oversee thedistribution of some of the billions of dollars (euros) inaid pledged since the Dec. 26 disaster. The Norwegian envoy discussed the plan with PresidentChandrika Kumaratunga in Colombo on Tuesday and traveled torebel-dominated Kilinochchi early Wednesday. The tsunami killed more than 31,000 Sri Lankans anddisplaced a further 1 million.
