Copenhagen, Denmark, July 6, SPA -- U.S. President George W. Bushon Wednesday defended the treatment of prisoners atGuantanamo and said they will be given fair trials. Bush, speaking at a news conference during a visit toDenmark, said Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen raisedconcerns about the U.S. detention camp in Cuba. "The prisoners are well-treated in Guantanamo. There'stotal transparency. The International Red Cross can inspectanytime, any day," Bush said. "These people are being treated humanely. There are veryfew prison systems around the world that have seen suchscrutiny as this one," he was quoted as saying by The Associated Press. Bush noted that many prisoners had been sent home, whilethe U.S. judicial system is deciding whether to try othersin military or civilian courts. "The reason why you haven't seen any adjudication ofindividuals is because our court system is determiningwhere best to try people," he said. "Once the judicialbranch of government makes its decision, then we'll proceedforward giving people fair and open trials." An estimated 540 detainees _ most of them captured duringbattles in Afghanistan _ are being held at the Guantanamocamp. Some detainees have been held for more than three yearswithout being charged. The U.S. government contends theprisoners are enemy combatants and are not entitled toconstitutional protections. Alluding to the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States,Bush told reporters not to forget that there was an ongoingwar against terrorism.
