Kiev, Ukraine, Feb 11, SPA -- Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenkomet Friday with a U.S. congressional delegation thatincluded the two prominent U.S. senators who nominated himfor the Nobel Peace Prize. Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. John McCain were part of an11-member bipartisan delegation visiting the Ukrainiancapital to discuss ways to strengthen U.S.-Ukrainianrelations, the U.S. Embassy said. Clinton, a liberal Democrat and the wife of formerPresident Bill Clinton, and McCain, a conservativeRepublican, nominated Yushchenko and Georgian PresidentMikhail Saakashvili for the world's most prestigious award.The prize is given out every fall. In their nomination letter last month, the U.S. senatorscommended the presidents for winning "popular support forthe universal values of democracy, individual liberty andcivil rights." Yushchenko and Saakashvili both came to power after massdemonstrations protesting fraudulent votes in their formerSoviet republics. Yushchenko has pledged to fight corruption, increaseliving standards and find a place for his 48-million nationin the European Union. His government has also said thatimproving ties with the United States would be a priority,along with maintaining Ukraine's historic partnership withRussia.
