Baghdad, June 19, SPA -- A suicide car bomber struck an Iraqimilitary checkpoint at a joint operations center north ofBaghdad on Sunday, killing two soldiers and one civilian,officials said. Thirteen others were wounded in the attack,part of violence that killed at least three others in thecountry. The suicide attack occurred at 9:45 a.m. (0545 GMT) inTikrit, Saddam Hussein's hometown 130 kilometers (80 miles)north of Baghdad, Army Capt. Muhanad Ahmed said. Thecivilian killed was an employee who manned the securitycheckpoint. The wounded included eight soldiers and five civilians,Ahmed said. Civilians were near the checkpoint becauseconstruction workers were fixing the gate. Elsewhere, gunmen killed two Iraqi police officers inwestern Baghdad as they headed to work Sunday morning. Thepolicemen were on their way to Diyala Bridge police stationin the capital when the shooting occurred, Iraqi army Capt.Usama Adnan said. A second band of gunmen killed an electrical engineer whowas on his way to work at the Dora oil refinery in southernBaghdad, said Dr. Muhanad Jawad of the capital's Al-Yarmoukhospital.
