Pakistan urges Muslim countries to have good ties with the West

Islamabad, May 28, SPA -- Pakistan's prime minister onSaturday urged Muslim states to have good ties with theWest for dealing with threats like nuclear proliferationand terrorism, the country's state-run news agencyreported. Shaukat Aziz made the call in an opening address at ameeting of several senior officials from the Organizationof Islamic Conference, the world's largest 57-member Muslimbloc, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported. Aziz said Muslims faced threats such as poverty,territorial disputes and denial of justice, APP reported. He said that those threats have been compounded by newthreats of nuclear proliferation, terrorism, extremism andthe "increased use of unilateralism." A new relationship between Muslims and the West built onmutual respect, tolerance and understanding needs to evolveto effectively deal with these threats, Aziz said, APPreported. The two-day meeting of the "commission of eminentpersonalities" from OIC states will discuss how to reformthe body.
