Hyderabad, May 13, SPA -- Police opened fire Friday onsupporters of an opposition party in southern India, killing at least six, after a clash in which party members accused police of murdering a lawmaker and burned 20 trucks and buses, police said. One policeman died in the violence, they said. Fifteen other police and six supporters of the TeluguDesam Party were injured, Deputy Inspector-General ofPolice Jayarami Reddy said. A party lawmaker, Paritala Ravi, was gunned down byunidentified assailants on Jan. 24. The party blames policefor his death, according to a report of the Associated Press. Friday's violence erupted as Ravi's wife, Paritala Sunita,was leading a procession of hundreds of party workers tofile her candidacy for a by-election next month to fill herhusband's seat in the state legislature, Reddy said. He said party members attacked police with stones andwooden sticks and burned about 20 trucks and buses inAnantpur district, 500 kilometers (310 miles) south ofHyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh state.
