truce with Israel Cairo, March 15, SPA -- Leaders of Palestinian factions gathered in Cairo for talks Tuesday with Egyptian and Palestinian officials aimed at consolidating a fragile cease-fire _ possibly nailing down a six-month or one-year halt in violence _ hoped to lead to fresh peacenegotiations. The talks _ the fourth attempt to unite and quietPalestinian extremism since the uprising started anew fouryears ago _ were opening in a climate seen as moreconducive for a breakthrough in the stalled Arab-Israelipeace process than in the past.
