Cairo, Nov 7, SPA -- Syria pledged Sunday it will do all itcan to stop infiltration through its border with Iraq. Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa said during ashort visit to Cairo to discuss the deteriorating situationin Iraq that a conference to be held in Egypt later thismonth will help stabilize Syria's war-torn neighbor. "We are with Iraq's security and with halting thiscross-border infiltration into Iraq," al-Sharaa toldreporters after his meeting with President Hosni Mubarak. Middle East states and the powerful Group of Eightindustrial nations are expected to throw their supportbehind the Iraqi interim government's efforts towardstability at a global conference scheduled Nov. 22-23 inthe Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik. China, theUnited Nations, the Arab League, the Organization ofIslamic Conference and the European Union also willparticipate. Al-Sharaa said Iraq's interior minister, Falah Naqib, wasdue in Damascus soon to sign an agreement on cooperating tocontrol the porous border. On other issues, al-Sharaa said he and Mubarak discussedthe situation in the Palestinian territories in view ofYasser Arafat's grave illness. He called on rivalPalestinian factions to pull together.
