Manila, Sept 11, SPA -- Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Saturday appealed to the public to remain vigilant against terrorists as the world commemorates the third anniversary of the suicide bombings in the United States. Arroyo said the war of terrorism is far from over and the threats of terrorist attacks in the country remain despite recent successes by security forces against suspected terrorists. "The deadly threat is still there," she said, citing Thursday's bombing in Jakarta, which killed nine people, but added that security forces will continue operations against suspected terrorist cells in the country to prevent them from carrying out any attacks. "We need the vigilance of every Filipino to pre-empt any strike and to intercept any remaining terrorist cells that may be planning mayhem," she added. Arroyo vowed to further intensify cooperation with security forces from neighbouring countries in the fight against terrorists in the region. "We will not let them taunt us or intimidate us," Arroyo said. Thousands of police officers and soldiers were deployed in embassies and vital installations in the capital and key urban centers in the country after the bombing in Jakarta outside the Australian embassy. Anti-riot policemen blocked a group of protesters from marching in front of the United States Embassy in Manila to prevent any untoward incidents. The protesters, who denounced the continued occupation of Iraq by the United States and its allies, voluntarily ended the march after police officers stood their ground and threatened to disperse them with water cannons. --SPA 1434 Local Time 1134 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/200395
