Moscow, Sept 1, SPA -- About a score of attackers bearing guns and reportedly wrapped in suicide-bomb belts men seized anelementary school in the Russian region of North OssetiaWednesday morning and were holding hundreds of hostagesincluding some 200 children. The seizure took place on the first day of the Russianschool year, when a large number of parents had accompaniedtheir children to class. Reports said the raid took placejust after a ceremony marking the school year's start, whenthe attackers drove up in a covered truck of the typeoften used for troop transport. Gunfire broke out after the raid and at least threeteachers and two police officers were wounded, said AndreiPolyansky, a police spokesman for southern Russia. The ITAR-Tass news agency, citing regional emergencyofficials, said about 400 people including some 200children were being held captive. A regional policeofficial, speaking on condition of anonymity, said thehostages had been herded into the school gymnasium. The attackers warned they would blow up the school ifpolice tried to storm it and demanded talks with regionalofficials, news reports said, but it was not what could beat issue if the talks occur.
