Geneva, Sept 10, SPA -- The United States held talks withdisarmament officials from major countries Friday as itsteps up pressure on Iran to renounce any move towardacquiring nuclear weapons, officials said. Washington wants the backing of the Group of Eight nationsfor its attempts to have the International Atomic EnergyAgency declare Iran in violation of the NuclearNonproliferation Treaty. Such a vote by the IAEA board at its three-day meeting inVienna, Austria, starting Monday, could lead to U.N.Security Council sanctions. The United States demands that Iran renounce uraniumenrichment, which could be used to develop nuclear weapons. Iran insists it only is interested in nuclear power, whichcan be created with lower levels of enrichment than thelevels necessary for nuclear weapons. Britain, France and Germany have signaled they don't wantthe IAEA to vote on the U.S. proposal before November togive diplomatic efforts more chance to work. Russia has said it will continue to work with Iran onbuilding its nuclear power program, but says it will ensurethat its cooperation cannot contribute to a nuclear weaponsprogram. Russia's position has been criticized by theUnited States. Also attending the Geneva meeting are officials from theother G-8 countries: Italy, Japan and Canada.--SPA1348 Local Time 1048 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/200058
