Srinagar, Aug 31, SPA -- The younger brother of Indian Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was shot at by suspected rebels while visiting Suruti, a village about 190kilometers (120 miles) northeast of Jammu, the wintercapital of Jammu-Kashmir, a police officer said today oncondition of anonymity. Mohammed Abbas Azad escaped unhurt but his armed guardreceived serious gunshot injuries and was hospitalized, theofficer said. Azad is a civilian contractor. Meanwhile, an overnight gunbattle between the suspected rebels and the army left two rebel fighters and a civilian dead in the India-controlled part of Kashmir. Soldiers surrounded a house in Nupora village Monday nightand two men fired on them from inside, said Maj. N.Y.Sawant, spokesman for counterinsurgency operations innorthern Kashmir. The soldiers fatally shot one of the two gunmen when theytried to flee the house, Sawant said. The other died incontinued fighting, he said.
