Washington, Rabi'I 3, 1434, Jan 15, 2013, SPA - The United States was “horrified” to learn that many Syrians killed over the weekend by the Syrian regime’s aerial attacks were children, the State Department said Monday. “Over the weekend, we saw the regime escalate its brutality against its people, notably with airstrikes in the suburbs of Damascus as well as in Azaz, Daraa, Daraya, Deir el-Zour, Ghouta, (and) Moadamiyeh,” State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters. “We were also deeply saddened to hear of the death of one local coordinating committee member and activist, Ahmed el Khusa, who was killed by a sniper last week while delivering bread to refugees in Yarmouk. So again, this just speaks to the kinds of tactics and techniques that Al-Assad regime continues to use against its people,” Nuland said. Nuland also said the United States is aware of calls at the U.N. Security Council Monday to bring Syria before the International Criminal Court (ICC). “We share the view, as we’ve said all along, that those who are guilty of atrocities need to face justice, that the Syrian people are going to have to decide when this conflict is over how to take that forward,” Nuland said. --SPA 11:31 LOCAL TIME 08:31 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/1068829
