United Nations, Jumada I 18, 1433, Apr 10, 2012, SPA - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday warned Syria to comply with Kofi Annan’s six-point peace plan and that it must do so without condition. The Syrian government accepted Annan’s plan on April 1, but on Sunday a spokesman for the Syrian Foreign Ministry said the government would need written guarantees from the opposition. The plan calls for the withdrawal of troops and heavy machinery from towns and cities by April 10 and a complete ceasefire by April 12. “The secretary-general reiterates his demand that the government of Syria immediately cease all military actions against civilians and fulfill all of its commitments made through Joint Special Envoy Kofi Annan,” Ban’s office said in a statement. “The timeline for the complete cessation of violence endorsed by the Security Council must be respected by all without condition.” Ban also condemned cross-border fire from Syria into Lebanon and Turkey that resulted in deaths. “The secretary-general strongly deplores today’s fatal cross-border shootings from Syria into Turkey, as well as into Lebanon,” the statement said. --SPA 10:48 LOCAL TIME 07:48 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/987403
