United Nations, Jumada II 3, 1433, Apr 24, 2012, SPA - The top U.N. political official said Monday the Syrian government was still using heavy weapons and had failed to fully implement the six-point peace plan approved by the regime of President Bashar Al-Assad. B. Lynn Pascoe, the undersecretary-general for political affairs, told the U.N. Security Council the cease-fire remained incomplete and “human rights violations are still perpetrated with impunity.” “We are at a pivotal moment in Syria,” Pascoe told the 15-nation body, which on Saturday authorized the deployment of 300 unarmed observers to Syria to augment the small number of monitors on the ground there. Pascoe demanded the immediate withdrawal of weapons and troops from cities and towns, and he said Syria’s compliance with other elements of the peace plan, including releasing detainees and allowing peaceful demonstrations, were “clearly insufficient.” Pascoe said the United Nations hopes an expanded observer force will help stop the killing and create conditions for a “credible political process.” --SPA 10:34 LOCAL TIME 07:34 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/991689
