Saudi Arabia’s permanent representative to the UN Ambassador Abdulaziz Alwasil said that designating Houthis as a terrorist organization has become an urgent demand among the people of the region. He called on Monday on the Security Council to take stronger action against the Houthis if the Iran-backed militia continues to stall and reject peaceful solutions to the conflict in Yemen. Alwasil commended the UN’s special envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg for his efforts to ensure peace in Yemen. He also reiterated Saudi Arabia’s support for the efforts of the UN’s humanitarian chief, Martin Griffiths, to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people. “We’re currently going through an extremely sensitive moment, which puts the Houthis leaders at the forefront of the international scene again to provide them with another opportunity to give priority to the Yemeni national interest.” He said that requires laying down arms, accepting a peaceful solution, and engaging in serious and direct discussions with honest intentions, in accordance with the Gulf initiative, the outcomes of the national dialogue, international resolutions, and relevant regional initiatives. “It is indeed a historic moment.” He expressed hope that the Houthis will abide by all the pledges they have previously made during the negotiations and avoid thwarting peace efforts at the last minute.
