Johannesburg, Muharram 02, 1437, October 15, 2015, SPA -- Two people died after a scaffold bridge collapsed over a major Johannesburg highway Wednesday afternoon, a paramedic at the scene said, according to dpa. Emergency services cut through the bridge's steel scaffolding as they tried to reach a driver trapped in a crushed minibus taxi. Large crowds, gathered on a concrete bridge overlooking the highway, stared in horror at the scene below. "I have never seen anything like this," said Johanna Mazwai, who walks over the bridge on her way home from work. "God be with them," Mazwai added. Three people remained trapped in the wreckage, said Robert Mulaudzi, a spokesman for Johannesburg's emergency services. He added that five were critically injured and 21 were receiving medical attention. "We are doing the best we can," Mulaudzi said. Traffic in and out of Johannesburg was backed up for several kilometres, and authorities dispatched helicopters to fly victims to the hospital. Murray & Roberts, the construction company building the bridge, said the accident happened after strong winds started to blow, according to a report from Talk Radio 702. The company said final reinforcements were being applied around the bridge under construction when the structure was blown over. City spokesman Nthatisi Modingoane said an investigation would be launched into the cause of the collapse. "We want to institute a proper investigation so that we can get to the bottom of this issue," he said. --SPA 03:36 LOCAL TIME 00:36 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
