Lima, Sha'ban 22, 1436, Jun 9, 2015, SPA -- Seventeen people who were riding in the open on the back of a lorry were killed when the vehicle plunged 100 metres down a ravine in the Peruvian Andes, authorities said Monday, according to dpa. The dead were school children, parents and teachers from a local school, Ruben Alva, governor of the Huanuco region, told Peruvian radio station RPP. "In rural areas people move in many different ways, but nowhere in the world is it normal to transport people in the back of a truck," he said. Thirty people were injured in the accident, which happened late Sunday in the province of Yarowilca. They were returning from a parade to mark the anniversary of the province. The truck driver survived and was under arrest. The cause of the accident was under investigation. Alva said the road was in good condition, and the driver was the main suspect as the investigation got under way. The injured, most of them between the ages of 9 and 15, were being treated in local hospitals, although seven were being transferred to Lima due to the seriousness of their injuries. --SPA 02:59 LOCAL TIME 23:59 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
