New York, Muharram 12, 1438, Oct 13, 2016, SPA -- The brakes on the train involved in a deadly crash in the US state of New Jersey two weeks ago were functioning properly, according to a preliminary report of the accident published Thursday, leaving the cause of the crash unclear, dpa reported. Investigators for the National Transportation Safety Board, who interviewed the crew and examined the train's data recorder, mechanical equipment and the track area, have yet to find anything out of the ordinary. One person was killed and 108 people got injured when the train overran the bumping post at the train station in Hoboken, just outside of New York City. The train driver, who has been employed by the train company New Jersey Transit since 1987 and has worked as a qualified engineer since 2000, cannot remember the moment of the accident. He told investigators that he remembered realizing that the train was 6 minutes late as it entered the station travelling at the speed limit of 16 kilometers per hour, but his next memory was of regaining consciousness on the floor of the train's engine car. Investigators found earlier that the train sped up less than a minute before the accident, reaching twice the speed limit before hitting the bumping post at the end of the track. -- SPA 20:35 LOCAL TIME 17:35 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
