Berlin, Ramadan 13, 1436, June 30, 2015, SPA -- Germany will increase its defence budget and aim to achieve the 2-per-cent GDP target laid out by NATO, Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen said in Berlin on Tuesday, according to dpa. Speaking at an event in Berlin to mark the 60th anniversary of Germany joining the trans-Atlantic defence alliance, she said: "Security requires investment." Germany currently only spends 1.2 per cent of its gross domestic product on defence. By 2019, the defence budget was due to increase from 33 billion to 35 billion euros (37 billion to 39 billion dollars), but this is still far short of the 2-per-cent target. In order to reach NATO's target, Germany would have to spend 58 billion euros based on last year's GDP figure. Only five of the 28 NATO members currently spend at least 2 per cent of GDP on defence: the United States, Britain, Greece, Poland and Estonia. --SPA 15:53 LOCAL TIME 12:53 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
