Kano, Sha'ban 15, 1436, Jun 2, 2015, SPA -- At least 40 people were killed after a bomb ripped through a crowded marketplace in the north-eastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, witnesses said Tuesday. "Over 30 charred bodies of the victims were evacuated to the morgue in my presence. It was a terrible sight. Several others were seriously injured," Maiduguri resident Alhassan Mshelia told dpa. There were many other bodies on the scene, according to Mshelia. National broadcaster Channels TV spoke of at least 30 people being killed in the blast, while a group of civilian paramilitaries said they had counted 12 bodies. Borno State police commissioner Aderemi Opadokun confirmed only five deaths in the afternoon. The source of the explosion remained unclear by evening. Some witnesses spoke of a suicide bombing, while others said a bomb had been placed underneath a butcher's table. --SPA 21:50 LOCAL TIME 18:50 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
