Beijing, Safar 25, 1438, Nov 25, 2016, SPA -- The death toll in a construction accident at a power plant in eastern China has risen to 74, state media reported Friday. According to dpa, sixty-eight victims had been identified by Thursday evening, the Xinhau news agency reported, adding that the youngest victim was aged 23 and the oldest 53. Construction company Hebei Yineng conceded that the building work in in the city of Fengcheng had been proceeding in a hurry, the newspaper Pengpai Xinwen reported, and an unnamed source said workers had been under time pressure. The accident took place Thursday in the eastern Jiangxi province when a platform carrying about 60 workers collapsed inside an under-construction cooling tower, Xinhua reported. About a dozen people were on the ground waiting to start their shift when the platform collapsed, but most managed to escape. "Several elevators collapsed. All those on the platform fell and were crushed by the steel bars and other materials," Xinhua quoted a survivor as saying. More than 300 rescuers and seven cranes were involved in the rescue effort. --SPA 13:29 LOCAL TIME 10:29 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w276706
