President of Human Rights Commission: Saudi Leadership Seeks to Achieve Aspirations of the Saudi People 3 Geneva

Dr. Al-Aiban pointed out that a Royal Decree No. 25803 dated 29/5/1439 AH was issued on providing legal assistance to women and children in cases of harm. He said that the Ministry of Labor and Social Development, in coordination with the Saudi Lawyers Association, was directed to get a list of the names and addresses of legal aid lawyers to cooperate with them according to paragraph (11) of Article (13) of the organization of Saudi Lawyers Association that was issued by the Council of Ministers Decision No. (317) dated 8/7/1436 AH. The ministry was also directed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Mawada Charity to reduce divorce and its effects, and was directed to cooperate with National Society For Human Rights in providing legal aid. It is worth mentioning that these legal bases do not only address some of the challenges, but they correct some of the misconceptions that might impede the empowerment of women, in addition to the measures taken in the field of human rights awareness, especially the women's rights. In the framework of exerted efforts to confront domestic violence, Dr. Al-Aiban said that a specialized center has been established to receive domestic violence reports and it is working 24 hours a day with full female cadre. The center contributes to rapid intervention in cases of harm and domestic violence in coordination with government authorities and civil society institutions. A committee to combat trafficking in persons was established by the relevant government authorities. Dr. Al-Aiban said that the most notable developments in the field of women's participation in political and public life are appointing thirty women in Shura Council which is 20% of the total number of members of Shura Council, appointing six women in Council of the Human Rights Commission which is 25% of the total number of members of the Council, appointing many women in the decision-making positions and having the right for women to nominate and elect in municipal councils as they were allowed to nominate and elect in the Council of Chambers of Commerce. Efforts in the field of women's health resulted in many positive results, including raising the level of health services provided to beneficiaries based on the principle of gender equality. These efforts include many field such as maternal and child care, health care for elderly and people with disabilities, health care for female students, mental health, health care in cases of accidents, emergencies and disasters, control of infectious diseases, treatment of incurable diseases, organ transplantation and other elements of comprehensive health care. --More 23:10 LOCAL TIME 20:10 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w626564
