United Nations, Rabi'I 23, 1438, Dec 22, 2016, SPA -- The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has welcomed the adoption of a resolution to establish a neutral and independent international mechanism to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the most serious crimes, under international law, in Syria since 2011, expressing hope that its adoption and rapid implementation to be a deterrent to contribute to putting an end to the Syrian regime's violations. The Kingdom reiterated the urgent need that the United Nations General Assembly holds an emergency special session in which it assumes responsibility for the protection of security and peace in Syria. This came during a commentary made by the Kingdom before the United Nations General Assembly last night on the use of the right of reply against the Syrian representative at the General Assembly's session to adopt a resolution on the establishment of a neutral and independent international mechanism to assist in the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the most serious crimes committed, under the international law, in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011 and the commentary was delivered by the first secretary at the Saudi delegation to the United Nations Manal Hassan Radwan, in which she expressed her thanks to the delegations of Liechtenstein and the State of Qatar for sponsoring this important resolution as well as to about 60 countries from different geographical regions that have adopted the resolution, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, pointing out that the decision was consistent with the accountability demand contained in the resolution issued by the emergency meeting of the Arab League Council held on Monday, December 19, 2016 on Syria." --More 13:49 LOCAL TIME 10:49 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w296237
