Ambassador Al-Maalami meets Director of the UNRWA Representative Office in New York

New York, March 18, 2020, SPA -- The Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdullah bin Yahya Al-Maalami, here today met with Director of the Representative Office in New York to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the newly appointed Ambassador Greta Gunnarsdottir. At the beginning of the meeting, Ambassador Al-Maalami congratulated Ambassador Gunnarsdottir on her assumption of the position, wishing her success in her mission, noting the Kingdom's permanent delegation's keenness to enhance cooperation with the UNRWA Representative Office in New York to serve the joint efforts. Ambassador Al-Maalami affirmed the Kingdom’s firm belief in the centrality of the Palestinian cause and its keenness to provide everything that would help the brotherly Palestinian people of all walks of life to face the difficult humanitarian conditions in which they live in light of the continued Israeli occupation, especially the millions of them who live in refugee camps, stressing the important role of (UNRWA) to provide a decent life for millions of Palestinian refugees, and to provide education, health care and other opportunities, pointing to the Kingdom's keenness to continue supporting UNRWA, as it believes in its lofty mission and important role. The Director of the UNRWA Office during the meeting thanked the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its generous and continuous support to UNRWA, which reflects the Kingdom's faith and interest in this issue, which made it one of the largest donor countries to the Agency. The Director of the UNRWA Office also reviewed the financial challenges facing the Agency and its impact on the efforts and services it provides to Palestinian refugees in the camps, especially in light of the precautionary measures taken by UNRWA to confront the Coronavirus and ensuring the provision of the necessary health care to Palestinian refugees, and the continued provision of basic education services using modern technologies.
