Kigali, Dhu-AlHijjah 27, 1437, September 28, 2016, SPA -- A Rwandan genocide suspect arrived back in his home country Wednesday after being deported by the United States, witnesses said, according to dpa. Leopold Munyakazi, 65, was handed over to Rwandan police by US officials at Kigali airport. The linguistics professor, who had lived for 12 years in the US, is considered by Rwandan prosecutors as one of the key ideologists of the genocide in which Hutu extremists killed 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus in 1994. Munyakazi gave a speech telling Hutus that Tutsis deserved to be killed, according to the charges against him. Munyakazi also ordered Hutu militiamen to hunt down Tutsi civilians in Kayanzi in the south, according to Jean-Damascene Bizimana, executive secretary of Rwanda's National Commission for the Fight Against Genocide. Munyakazi is also accused of directly participating in killings. The professor maintains his innocence. Rwanda had issued arrest warrants for Munyakazi in 2006 and 2008. --SPA 22:07 LOCAL TIME 19:07 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
