Salmon genetically altered to grow faster can now be consumed without concern, the Food and Drug Administration said on Thursday after years of testing. A special label identifying the fish as genetically altered was not necessary, the regulators said. The salmon is the first genetically modified animal approved for human consumption by the agency. Many consumer groups have come out against the decision, and have pledged to fight it.
