Washington, Dhu-AlQa'dah 26, 1436, September 10, 2015, SPA -- The United States is prepared to increase the number of refugees it resettles by at least 5,000 next year as European counties face difficulties in accommodating tens of thousands of refugees. Two officials and a congressional aide said Secretary of State John Kerry told lawmakers in a closed-door meeting Wednesday that the United States will raise its global quota for resettling refugees from 70,000 to 75,000 next year, a number that could increase further. A small fraction of those would be from Syria, the sources said. Kerry told reporters after the meeting the United States will increase the number of refugees it would resettle but did not provide specifics. The two officials and the aide spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity. -- SPA 02:25 LOCAL TIME 23:25 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
