UNITED NATIONS, Rabi'I 29, 1436, Jan 20, 2015, SPA -- The U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting Tuesday on the chaos occurring in Yemen. Violence has gripped the capital Sanaa since Monday and has been described by many as a coup. Authorities in Yemen say that Houthi rebels have been shelling the presidential residence and have raided the presidential palace. British Ambassador to the U.N. Mark Lyall Grant said that he called Tuesday’s closed-door meeting to hear a briefing on the situation from U.N. envoy for Yemen Jamal Benomar, who is in Qatar and heading to Sanaa later Tuesday. “Clearly the situation has deteriorated very significantly over the last 48 hours and that’s why the Security Council needs to meet and decide its response,” Lyall Grant said. --SPA 23:23 LOCAL TIME 20:23 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
