New York, Rabi'I 18, 1436, January 09, 2015, SPA -- The UN Security Council supports the planned military intervention by United Nations and government forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo to stop combatants, dpa quoted the council as saying Thursday. The statement came after the armed group Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) failed to surrender and demobilize by a January 2 deadline set by the Southern African Development Community and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region. "The Security Council ... stresses the importance of neutralizing all armed groups including, among others, the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR)," the council said. Preparations already have begun for a joint military operation between the Congolese army and the UN peacekeeping mission in the country, which has the organization's first-ever military formation authorized to carry out offensive operations. The FDLR, which is based in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been destabilizing the security and humanitarian situation in the eastern part of the country. The group also crosses the border into Rwanda to stage attacks. -- SPA 11:46 LOCAL TIME 08:46 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
