Tokyo, Muharram 14, 1436, November 07, 2014, SPA -- A Japanese governor on Friday said he supports restarting two nuclear reactors near an active volcano in southern Japan despite public opposition. The decision was "unavoidable," Kagoshima Governor Yuichiro Ito told a news conference. His announcement followed the approval by the prefectural assembly earlier in the day of the restart of the Sendai Nuclear Power Station, 1,000 kilometres south-west of Tokyo. The move set the stage for the two reactors to become the first among the nation's 48 units to be reactivated since regulations were updated following Japan's worst nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. The Fukushima plant suffered the triple meltdown after a tsunami swept through the facilities in March 2011. The resumption of operations at the two reactors at the Sendai plant is expected early next year, pending further investigations by the Nuclear Regulation Authority. The plant, operated by Kyushu Electric Power Co, is located 50 kilometres from the active volcano Sakurajima on the island of Kyushu. -- SPA 15:27 LOCAL TIME 12:27 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
