Tokyo, Ramadan 19, 1435, July 16, 2014, SPA -- Japanese regulators on Wednesday approved a draft safety plan to restart nuclear reactors near an active volcano amid lingering concerns following the 2011 Fukushima atomic disaster, dpa reported. The Nuclear Regulatory Authority released a draft safety report that is necessary to reactivate the two reactors at the Sendai nuclear plant, 1,000 kilometres south-west of Tokyo. The facility is located 50 kilometres from the active volcano Sakurajima on the southern island of Kyushu. The Sendai reactors operated by Kyushu Electric Power Co became the first to meet new safety standards introduced a year ago, following the 2011 disaster that was the world's worst nuclear accident since the 1986 Chernobyl meltdown. The Fukushima plant suffered meltdowns in three reactors after it was hit by an earthquake and tsunami. --SPA 14:38 LOCAL TIME 11:38 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
