United Nations, Dhu-AlHijjah 20, 1435, Oct 14, 2014, SPA -- The World Food Programme (WFP) said Tuesday that it will cut food rations to over 1 million people in Afghanistan due to lack of funding. The agency operates on donations from member countries and faces a $30 million shortage for its mission in Afghanistan, said the country’s director, Claude Jibidar. “We have had to cut down the rations of the people we are assisting, just so that we can buy some time, so we don’t stop altogether,” Jibidar told Reuters in an interview. The food rations will cut down 2,100 calories to 1,500 calories in a day to over 1 million Afghans, including those who have fled the war between the Taliban and the government. The WFP has nearly six weeks to deposit food supply before Afghanistan’s harsh winter sets in, said Jibidar. The WFP helps feed 3.7 million people, only 10 percent of the population, and the country will need help as foreign combat troops withdraw from the country to focus on the Iraq, Syria, and Ebola crises. --SPA 23:34 LOCAL TIME 20:34 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
