UNITED NATIONS, Muharram 28, 1437, November 10, 2015, SPA -- The U.N. refugee agency (UNHCR) said Monday that it has managed to deliver aid for the first time in more than two months to areas of eastern Ukraine beyond government control, reaching 12,000 people with plans to expand greatly as winter sets in. UNHCR announced that vital aid, including plastic sheltering, construction material, and thousands of blankets, reached the city of Luhansk in a convoy of nine trucks Saturday, the first U.N. convoy to reach the city in nearly three months. “This is a small drop in the ocean of needs we see in the conflict-affected areas,” said Jean-Noel Wetterwald, agency head of operations for Ukraine, where according to UNHCR, fighting that broke out last year has displaced over two million people within the country and abroad, with another two million in need of vital aid in non-government-controlled areas. The latest delivery included 10,000 blankets, 10,000 towels, 5,000 buckets, and a similar number of jerry cans and plastic sheets, as well as cement and timber for shelter repairs. --SPA 11:33 LOCAL TIME 08:33 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
