United Nations, Dhu-AlHijjah 20, 1435, Oct 14, 2014, SPA -- The U.N. Security Council Tuesday extended the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Haiti by a year and approved a plan to cut by more than half the number of military personnel by June 2015. The council’s unanimous approval came amid questions from some troop-contributing countries about the fast pace of the drawdown. Argentina’s U.N. ambassador said that the security situation in Haiti is still not improved enough, while Britain’s deputy U.N. ambassador pointed out that peacekeepers have been called out just twice in the past 18 months. Currently, the peacekeeping mission has a troop strength of 5,021. The resolution approved Tuesday would cut that to 2,370 by June 2015. --SPA 21:06 LOCAL TIME 18:06 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
