United Nations envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg held talks in Riyadh and the interim Yemeni capital, Aden, aimed at reaching a political solution in the war-torn country. In the Saudi capital, he met with the Kingdom’s Ambassador to Yemen and Supervisor General of the Saudi Program for Development and Reconstruction of Yemen (SPDRY) Mohammed bin Saeed Al Jaber. They discussed Saudi Arabia’s political, economic, development and relief efforts to back the Yemeni government and people. They also tackled means to bolster and support UN efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive political solution to the crisis and backing Yemen’s security, stability and development. While in Riyadh, Grundberg also met with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi and other Saudi officials. In a tweet, the envoy said his talks in Saudi Arabia addressed “ways to expand economic and humanitarian measures and to progress towards a national ceasefire and an inclusive Yemeni-owned political process under UN auspices.” Grundberg headed to Aden where he met with Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) Chairman Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi for talks on the latest developments in the country and UN peace efforts. Alimi stressed the government’s commitment to “fair and comprehensive peace and its backing of regional and international efforts to make the terrorist Iran-backed Houthi militias positively deal with all efforts to launch a UN-led comprehensive political process,” reported Yemen’s state news agency Saba. He added that the PLC is keen on providing all facilitations to the envoy to help him achieve his mission in Yemen.
