Saudi Ambassador to Yemen and Executive Director of Humanitarian Operations Support Center Mohammed Said Al Jaber met on Thursday in Riyadh with UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths and his assistant Moein Shreim. Talks during the meeting touched on the current situation in the country and the Kingdom’s support for the UN efforts to achieve a political solution to the Yemeni crisis. The officials also discussed humanitarian efforts for the relief of the Yemeni people and the means to stop the smuggling of weapons to the Houthi militias, as well as attacks by the Iranian-backed group against Saudi Arabia. Griffiths arrived in Riyadh on Thursday, coming from Abu Dhabi, where he met with Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi and Foreign Minister Abdul Malek al-Mekhlafi. Later on Thursday, the UN envoy held a series of meetings at the Yemeni embassy in Riyadh with representatives of Yemeni parties and political factions, who stressed their support for efforts aimed at achieving sustainable peace based on the Gulf Initiative and its implementation mechanism, the outcome of the Yemeni national dialogue and international resolutions, mainly UN Security Council resolution 2216. The Yemeni officials emphasized that repeated attacks by Houthi militias against Saudi territories have highlighted their lack of seriousness in responding to peace efforts. They also called on the UN envoy to work on the implementation of the Security Council resolutions on Yemen, stressing that that no peace efforts could succeed unless Houthi militias hand over their weapons and withdraw from all Yemeni cities and institutions.
